Ambassador Tomaso Pietro Marchegiani
Tomaso Pietro Marchegiani was born in Milan on 9 February 1967 and graduated in Modern Literature from the University of Milan in 1992.
He joined the Italian diplomatic service in 1997, beginning his professional career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Farnesina), within the Directorate General for Personnel and Administration.
After a brief training period at the Embassy of Italy in Turkey, he began his first overseas assignment in 2000 at the Embassy of Italy in the Russian Federation, where he served as Head of the Consular Chancery.
In 2004, he continued his career in Brussels as Consul of Italy.
In 2007, upon returning to the Farnesina, he joined the Directorate General for Italians Abroad, where he served as Head of the Office for International Adoptions and Foreign Nationals in Italy.
From 2010 to 2014, he served as Counsellor for External Relations (RELEX) at the Permanent Representation of Italy to the European Union in Brussels.
From 2015 to 2020, he was appointed Head of the Office for Bilateral Relations with France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. He subsequently became Head of the Office for Relations with Germany, the United Kingdom, the Benelux countries and Switzerland, within the Directorate General for the European Union.
From 2020 to 2023, he served as Consul General of Italy in Geneva.
On 30 October 2023, he became Head of Mission at the Embassy of Italy in Minsk.
Since 1 September 2026, he has served as Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
In 2010, Tomaso Marchegiani was awarded the rank of Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
Tomaso Marchegiani is married and has three children. He is an active rower and sailor and enjoys music, particularly playing the piano, as well as sculpture.
