The ATT is the main legally binding international instrument aimed at promoting the responsible trade in conventional arms and preventing their illicit trade and diversion.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"274\" data-end=\"733\">Italy, the first European Union country to ratify the Treaty in September 2013, is taking part in the Conference, reaffirming its strong commitment to the full and effective implementation and universalization of the ATT. In its <span class=\"contents\" data-content-reference-start=\"503\" data-content-reference-end=\"633\"><span class=\"\" data-state=\"closed\"><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/italiarappdisarmo.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2026-08-24-IT-ATT-CSP12-General-debate.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national statement<\/a><\/span><\/span>, Italy highlighted, in particular, the importance of strengthening national control systems, transparency and reporting obligations, as well as cooperation and assistance among States Parties.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"735\" data-end=\"1198\">Particular importance is being attached this year to the development of a five-year ATT Strategy, which will identify clear priorities and measurable objectives to strengthen the Treaty\u2019s effectiveness. Italy also reaffirmed its commitment to the Group of Friends of the Arms Trade Treaty, an informal, transregional platform aimed at fostering dialogue, cooperation and new initiatives in support of the universalization and implementation of the Treaty.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1200\" data-end=\"1465\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Against the backdrop of growing international tensions and conflicts, Italy also recalled the particular responsibility of States Parties to prevent irresponsible arms transfers and diversion, in full compliance with international humanitarian law and human rights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Twelfth Conference of States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) opened today in Geneva.
