The First Committee (Disarmament and Security) of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York concluded its work on Friday 9 November, adopting all 76 resolutions and decisions (15 more than in 2023) presented in the seven thematic clusters: nuclear, other weapons of mass destruction, outer space, conventional arms, other disarmament measures, regional disarmament, and disarmament machinery. The Italian delegation was led by Ambassador Leonardo Bencini. Italy actively participated in the debates, contributing to reaching agreement on some of the adopted resolutions.
The total number of statements delivered during the general debate and the seven thematic clusters increased compared to previous sessions: 588 statements versus 529 in 2023.
Of the 76 adopted resolutions and decisions, 31 were approved without a vote. However, four of these underwent a vote on individual paragraphs. Overall, the votes on complete texts and separate paragraphs totaled 201, reflecting the complexity of negotiations and the diverse positions of participating countries.
