Referring to the speech delivered by U.S. President Trump during the High-Level Week of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Ambassador Bencini expressed support for the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) and emphasized Italy’s readiness to cooperate with the United States and other States Parties. He also expressed the hope that the work initiated during the Ninth Review Conference — which he himself chaired — could be brought to completion in view of a forthcoming Special Conference, to be convened possibly in August 2026.

The Ambassador further affirmed that Italy fully supports the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), firmly condemning any use of such weapons.

In his statement (video), Italy’s concern also emerged regarding the risk of weapons of mass destruction being used by terrorist networks. Consequently, Ambassador Bencini underlined the key role of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 (UNSCR 1540) and of the Secretary-General’s Mechanism in implementing measures aimed at non-proliferation and conducting independent investigations into possible uses of biological weapons.
