Today in Geneva, the first 2026 session of the Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on emerging technologies in the area of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS), established within the framework of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), opened.
The meeting, which will run until 6 March 2026, is the first of two sessions scheduled for this year (the second will take place from 31 August to 4 September 2026).
The 2026 discussions build on the work and texts developed in previous meetings and focus on the substantive consideration of elements related to LAWS, with the aim of advancing international dialogue and reaching, by 2026, a consensus that can be presented at the Seventh Review Conference of the CCW, to be held from 16 to 20 November 2026 in Geneva.
Italy has been actively participating in the international debate on these weapons systems since 2013 and thus reaffirms its commitment to promoting responsible regulation of autonomous weapons systems, ensuring the primacy of the human element and full compliance with international humanitarian law.
