The second session of the Preparatory Committee for the Eleventh Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is currently taking place in Geneva. In addition to the 190 States Parties to the Treaty, numerous international organizations (including NATO) and civil society representatives are participating. Following the general debate that concluded today, the discussion will focus on the three pillars of the NPT: disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. In the statement delivered today on behalf of Italy, Ambassador Leonardo Bencini, Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament and Head of Delegation, reaffirmed Italy’s full support for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the expectation to bring the negotiation process back on a consensual path, after the last two Review Conferences failed to reach an agreement on a final document. “Italy believes that it is precisely in historical moments such as this that dialogue must be preserved and mutual trust restored to the maximum extent possible” stated Ambassador Bencini, adding that “There is no alternative to the multilateral system and no alternative to the NPT,.” The meeting of the Preparatory Committee will conclude on August 2nd, but it is unlikely that a report will be adopted, given the deep divergences of positions exacerbated by the current tense international context. The Eleventh NPT Review Conference will be held in New York in mid-2026. The statement is available at the following link and video.
