From 22 to 24 June 2026, Geneva is hosting the Syria Mine Action Partner Conference, organized by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) in cooperation with the Syrian National Mine Action Center (NMAC). The event brings together national authorities, donors, United Nations agencies, international organizations, and operational partners engaged in mine action and explosive ordnance management activities in Syria.
The conference responds to one of the most serious consequences of the Syrian conflict: the widespread contamination by explosive ordnance, which continues to pose a significant threat to civilians and remains a major obstacle to the safe return of displaced populations, the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and the country’s economic recovery.
Over the course of the three-day event, participants will review Syria’s national mine action framework, assess the scale and impact of contamination, and discuss key operational priorities and challenges on the ground.
Italy is actively participating in the conference and continues to support international efforts to address the threat posed by explosive ordnance contamination in Syria. In 2025, the Italian Government allocated €2 million to a 12-month initiative entitled “Reducing Explosive Ordnance Risks to Increase Safety and Support the Safe Return of Syrian Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees.” The project contributes to risk mitigation activities, the protection of vulnerable communities, and the safe return of internally displaced persons and Syrian refugees.
