Debate in the First Committee on other Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Cluster II

Ambassador Leonardo Bencini spoke yesterday during the thematic debate on Weapons of Mass Destruction (Cluster II) at the First Committee (Disarmament and Security) of the United Nations General Assembly. Italy, along with other EU partners, is engaged in effective multilateral action against the proliferation of these weapons, also to prevent them from falling into the hands of non-state actors, particularly terrorist networks.
The Ambassador emphasized that this could be a positive momentum, “created by the Ninth Review Conference of the BWC” of which he was President, “to convene a Special Conference in 2025 with the goal of adopting the two mechanisms envisaged in the Final Document, respectively on International Cooperation and Assistance and on Science and Technology“.
Italy reaffirms its strong support for the Chemical Weapons Convention and the OPCW, categorically condemning the use of these weapons and urging Syria and Russia to comply with their international obligations. In this context, Italy supports the Secretary-General’s Mechanism (UNSMG) to investigate the possible use of chemical or biological weapons.
