On 9 June, the Conference on Disarmament (CD) discussed the issue of its revitalization in an informal session. Delegations from member states examined the main issues related to the functioning of the body, with the aim of identifying practical institutional solutions that would enable the Conference to resume its institutional mandate, namely the negotiation of disarmament treaties.
In his statement, the Permanent Representative to the CD, Ambassador Leonardo Bencini, referred to some limited progress made in recent years, in particular the agreement reached in January 2025 under the Italian Presidency of the CD to establish subsidiary bodies, appoint their respective coordinators, and define a schedule. This marked the first time since 1996 that such an agreement had not been reached in January. Ambassador Bencini reiterated that, given the current stalemate, the 2025 “template” remains the most viable and practical solution for keeping dialogue alive in a spirit of continuity between sessions, creating a path that can gradually lead to the resumption of negotiations on specific instruments.
