Under the Presidency of the Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the Conference on Disarmament, Ambassador Julien Thöni, the Preparatory Committee for the Seventh Review Conference of the High Contracting Parties to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) opened its work in Geneva.
The Committee, meeting from 7 to 9 September, is tasked with defining the agenda and priorities for the Seventh Review Conference, scheduled to take place from 16 to 20 November 2026.
The discussions take on particular importance following the recent adoption of the report of the Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS). The progress made by the GGE is essential to advancing work on identifying concrete measures to ensure meaningful human control, uphold International Humanitarian Law and strengthen the effectiveness of the Convention, with the aim of reaching shared decisions capable of preventing the risks associated with the use of emerging technologies in armed conflicts.
Italy is actively participating in the proceedings through its Permanent Delegation in Geneva. In his statement, Ambassador Marchegiani reaffirmed the central and fundamental importance of the CCW, reiterating Italy’s longstanding commitment to disarmament, transparency and the responsible regulation of emerging weapon systems.
