Italy addressed the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, underscoring the need to revitalize the Geneva Conference on Disarmament, the main multilateral forum for disarmament negotiations.
In its statement, Italy highlighted the achievements of its 2025 Presidency, which had helped break the deadlock in the Conference’s work and resume substantive discussions among Member States, while expressing regret that this progress had not been sustained in 2026.
Italy also denounced Russia’s obstructionism, noting that, for the fourth consecutive year, Russia had prevented numerous European countries from participating as observers.
Finally, Italy reiterated the need to use consensus as a tool for dialogue rather than paralysis, reaffirming its commitment to revitalizing negotiations and strengthening multilateral disarmament institutions.
