On 22 October, during the debate on Cluster IV of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament, Ambassador Marchegiani, reaffirmed the central importance of international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians, expressing concern over the renewed use of anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions.

He reiterated Italy’s commitment to the universalisation and full implementation of the relevant conventions, welcoming progress in negotiations on lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS) under the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), ahead of the Review Conference in November.

He also reaffirmed Italy’s support for the Arms Trade Treaty, efforts to combat the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons, and the Political Declaration on Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas, calling for broader adherence to these instruments.
