The Thirteenth Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) opened on Tuesday, 16 September, in Geneva. The Convention establishes the prohibition of the development, production, acquisition, stockpiling, transfer, and use of cluster munitions, with the aim of ensuring greater protection of civilians during armed conflicts.

In its statement during the General Debate, Italy reaffirmed its commitment to the implementation of the Convention, stressing the urgency of a world free of these weapons and calling on States not yet party to join. Italy firmly condemned Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the indiscriminate use of cluster munitions, which continue to affect civilians above all.

Finally, Italy recalled its contribution to demining programs, victim assistance, and risk education, with financial support exceeding 100 million euros since 2001.

The Meeting of States Parties will conclude on Friday, 19 September.
