On 20 October, during the debate on Cluster III of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament, Ambassador Marchegiani, reaffirmed the central importance of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and the complementary role of responsible behaviour norms and legally binding instruments in preventing an arms race in outer space.
He underscored the importance of strengthening synergies between the multilateral processes in Geneva and Vienna, also in light of Italy’s chairmanship of COPUOS for the 2026–2027 biennium.
Finally, he reaffirmed Italy’s support for the launch of negotiations on a legally binding instrument prohibiting destructive direct-ascent anti-satellite missile tests.
