At today’s Plenary of the Conference on Disarmament, the Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Italy to the Conference on Disarmament, Ambassador Leonardo Bencini, emphasized the importance of maintaining multilateral dialogue on disarmament despite the current international context marked by conflicts and tensions.

He noted that, while new negotiations may be difficult in the short term, continuing discussions on arms control and nuclear security remains essential.

Ambassador Bencini stressed that nuclear disarmament and risk reduction are complementary goals, calling on nuclear-armed states to strengthen transparency, communication, and confidence-building measures.

Key priorities highlighted include compliance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the launch of negotiations on a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty, considered as concrete steps to reduce the risk of nuclear conflict.
