The third session of the Open-ended Working Group on the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space in all its Aspects (OEWG PAROS) opens today at the Palais des Nations in Geneva and will run until 10 July.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly, the Working Group will continue its consideration of key issues related to the prevention of an arms race in outer space. Discussions will focus in particular on threats to space systems, transparency and confidence-building measures, responsible behaviours in outer space, and possible options for strengthening the international normative framework.
Italy is actively participating in the work of the OEWG, reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism and to enhancing space security. The Italian delegation will support efforts to identify common ground on principles, norms and practical measures aimed at preserving outer space as a safe, secure, sustainable and accessible domain for all, in accordance with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
The session provides an important opportunity for dialogue among UN Member States on an issue of growing strategic significance, particularly in light of the increasing reliance of civil, commercial and security activities on space-based infrastructure. The Working Group will continue its mandate until 2028, with the objective of formulating recommendations for submission to the General Assembly.
