The 2024 session of the Conference on Disarmament opened on January 23 at the United Nations Palace in Geneva. Italy delivered its national statement on Thursday, January 25. In his address, Ambassador Bencini highlighted the key issues that the disarmament community must confront. He stressed, in particular, the urgent need to overcome the deadlock that has stalled the Conference on Disarmament for more than 30 years, and underscored the importance of resuming negotiations on matters of pressing relevance to international peace and security.
The Ambassador also reaffirmed Italy’s strong condemnation of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and denounced the numerous actions taken by Russia over the past two years that have undermined the global disarmament framework.
