Ambassador Leonardo Bencini, along with Ambassadors from other countries of the P6+2 group, met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations during his visit to Geneva, where Antonio Guterres addressed the High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament (CD). The P6+2 group is an informal forum for consultation and coordination that gathers the six presidents of the CD for each annual session, along with the last president of the previous session and the first of the next session. Ambassador Bencini participated in the meeting as Italy will hold the presidency of the Conference on Disarmament in January 2025. The P6+2 group, in addition to Italy, includes representatives from the six countries that will succeed in the presidency this year: India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, along with Hungary, the last presidency of 2023. This group plays a prominent role in order to ensure continuity in the work of the CD.

”The presence of Secretary-General António Guterres at the Conference on Disarmament” Ambassador Bencini stated ”is of particular importance. Italy appreciates the renewed emphasis that the Secretary-General places on the role of disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control as pillars of global peace and security, as well as of the United Nations system”.
