« No alternative to the multilateral system », says Ambassador Bencini in the First Committee debate on nuclear weapons of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York

During his statement yesterday morning in the First Committee (disarmament and security) of the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Leonardo Bencini reaffirmed Italy’s support for the multilateral system and the disarmament architecture. “Italy believes that the goal of complete nuclear disarmament can be achieved through a progressive, realistic, pragmatic and responsible approach. This approach should be based on concrete measures and an effective, verifiable and irreversible process, in a way that promotes international stability based on the principle of undiminished security for all” stated the Ambassador. It is therefore essential to put the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) back on a consensual track.

Italy urges UN member states to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and to respect its moratorium, recognizing the crucial importance of these measures for global security. Moreover, along with Japan and other countries, Italy is part of a transregional group dedicated to reinvigorating negotiations on the Treaty banning the production of fissile material (FMCT), a key step towards limiting nuclear proliferation.
