Debate on nuclear disarmament at the Conference on Disarmament (CD)

Today Ambassador Leonardo Bencini delivered a statement at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva during the debate on the cessation of the nuclear arms race and nuclear disarmament.

« Italy fully shares the goal of a peaceful and secure world completely free of nuclear weapons,” Ambassador Bencini stated. This can be achieved “through a progressive, realistic, pragmatic and responsible approach, based on concrete measures, resulting in an effective, verifiable and irreversible nuclear disarmament.”

The beginning of negotiations on a Treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons (FMCT) and the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty remain top priorities for Italy, Ambassador Bencini stated. In this respect, Italy is glad to have joined the G7 Leaders’ Hiroshima Vision and the FMCT Group of friends.

Today’s meeting for the first one under the Presidency of Iraq, who took over from Iran. Italy will hold the rotating Presidency of the CD in January-February 2025.
