Italy reaffirmed the centrality of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the importance of the control and verification systems coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during its statement at the session of the second Preparatory Committee for the 11th NPT Review Conference dedicated to the non-proliferation pillar. While recalling the main challenges to the sustainability of the non-proliferation system, the statement reiterated the strongest condemnation of the nuclear programs of Iran and DPRK, both in open violation of the NPT provisions, as well as the persistent and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric used by the Russian Federation. Italy’s full support for Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones (NWFZ) was also reaffirmed during the statement, expressing the hope that a shared path by all the countries in the region can soon lead to the establishment of such a zone in the Middle East.
