To strongly reaffirm Italy’s commitment to the multilateral system and the disarmament architecture, particularly at a time of major uncertainties. This was the main message that the Permanent Representative of Italy to the Conference on Disarmament, Amb. Leonardo Bencini, delivered on the occasion of his national statement at the high-level segment of the Conference on 26 February.
He reiterated Italy’s full support for the international order based on the rules, principles and values enshrined in the UN Charter, first and foremost those of sovereign equality, independence and territorial integrity of member states.
Amb. Bencini also put forward a number of operational proposals to strengthen the functioning of the Conference on Disarmament, including the change of its name to “Conference on Security and Disarmament”, and praised the hard work of many delegations during the Italian Presidency, the first of this annual session, to reach consensus on a program of work, which was achived in January for the first time since 1996.
