The work of the final session of the Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS), established in 2023 under the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), begins today in Geneva.
Taking place from 31 August to 4 September, the meeting represents a crucial step towards shaping the future of global regulation of these systems. This week, discussions will once again focus on the fundamental pillars of LAWS regulation, with the aim of advancing the elements of convergence that emerged during last March’s session. Participating States seek to present consensual elements to the Seventh Review Conference of the CCW, to be held in Geneva from 16 to 20 November.
The Italian delegation reiterates its determination to support a shared regulatory framework based on prohibitions and regulations, with the aim of ensuring full compliance with international humanitarian law and maintaining the centrality of the human element.
