Ambassador Leonardo Bencini addressed the Conference on Disarmament last Tuesday, the 11th of May, underscoring the increasing significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in disarmament, arms control, and non-proliferation efforts. He emphasized the critical need for effective governance frameworks to keep pace with rapid technological advancements, which often outstrip diplomatic processes.

‘’Italy has recognized artificial intelligence as a central pillar of the G7’s agenda’’ affirmed Ambassador Bencini, highlighting Italy’s steadfast commitment to this pivotal issue. In fact, Italy has co-sponsored a UN resolution recognizing AI’s potential to advance Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and foster global peace. “Harnessing the benefits and addressing the challenges of AI will be at the heart of the work of the diplomatic community for years to come”, Ambassador Bencini remarked.

Within the framework of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), the Italian delegation in Geneva is committed to facilitating discussions with a view to eventually negotiating an additional protocol to the CCW on lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS). According to Ambassador Bencini, the CCW remains the main platform for these discussions. The statement is available at the following link and audio.
